Donna E. Missel, 95, of Peru, formerly of Grand Ridge, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 25, 2024 at La Salle County Nursing Home in Ottawa.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday at the Hurst Funeral Home in La Salle with Pastor Mike Slutz officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Streator. Visitation will be in the funeral home from 9:00 AM until time of services.
Mrs. Missel was born in Streator on March 19, 1928 to Floyd and Hannah “Elsie” (Spraggon) Hoffner. She married William L. Missel on March 11, 1946. She was a homemaker and enjoyed raising a family and caring for the house.
Mrs. Missel was well known as an artist. She was worked mostly with acrylic paint but also was very talented with watercolors. She made homemade cards with watercolors for birthdays, anniversaries, and even her Christmas cards. She would sign and date the back of all her cards. She also made Christmas ornaments for her family and Christmas stockings for our troops. She was very good at sewing. Mrs. Missel was involved in her class reunions and even designed the artwork on the mugs that were made. When entering Grand Ridge, you can see some of her artwork as she painted the “Welcome” sign.
Mrs. Missel was active as a den mother with the Cub Scouts, and she was also a leader of the girls’ Bluebirds and Campfire Girls. Mrs. Missel was part of two Bridge clubs. She enjoyed listening to 1940’s big bands with her favorite being Glenn Miller. She enjoyed going out dancing with her husband. They also enjoyed traveling out west and going to Wyoming.
Mrs. Missel is survived by five children William “Neil” Missel of Ottawa, Paul (Shara) Missel of Bismarck, ND, Lorraine (Greg) Hamilton of Peru, Scott Missel of Isabella, MO, and Kurt (Rita) Missel of Wyanet; thirteen grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren with one on the way; one great-great-grandchild; one sister Judy Kohrt Wiseman of Henderson, NV; one niece; and two nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one sister Barbara Hoffner Artman, one niece, and two nephews.
Pallbearers will be Matt Hamilton, Kris Hamilton, Nicholas Missel, Keith Stevens, Luke Gensler, and Jordan Kiley.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family to be donated to Donna’s favorite charities.
